UNDERSTANDING THE STRIP
Las Vegas Boulevard runs roughly four miles between Mandalay Bay and the North Strip resorts. Resorts are so large that a walk that looks short on a map can take twenty minutes, much of it inside a casino. Think in three areas: South, Center and North Strip.
WHERE TO STAY
The Center Strip puts the most attractions within walking distance. The South Strip suits arena events and a slightly quieter base. The North Strip is newer and more spread out, and usually needs transport to reach the busiest sights.
WALKING
Cross only at pedestrian bridges — the Boulevard is not safe to cross at street level in most places. Comfortable shoes matter more here than almost anywhere else, and indoor routes through casinos are cooler in summer.
TRANSPORT & RIDESHARE
The Deuce bus covers the Strip day and night, free trams link several resort clusters, and the monorail runs behind the east-side hotels. Rideshare pickups are in designated zones or parking structures, so allow extra time at busy hours.
WEATHER
Summer afternoons regularly reach extreme heat, and shade is limited outdoors. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable for walking. Desert evenings can be much cooler than the day, especially in winter.
FREE ATTRACTIONS
You can fill an evening without paying for anything: the Bellagio fountains and conservatory, the Flamingo habitat, the Venetian canals, the LINQ Promenade and the Luxor sky beam are all free to see.
RESERVATIONS
Popular restaurants, shows and pools can book out well ahead, especially on weekends and around major events. Book what matters most to you before you fly, and keep the rest flexible.
DAY TRIPS FROM LAS VEGAS
Las Vegas is the natural base for the Southwest. The Grand Canyon West Rim is the most realistic single-day canyon trip. The South Rim, Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon are better with an overnight stop, and Zion and Bryce Canyon in Utah suit two or three days.
